I’m sure in your lifetime you’ve heard people or someone say “I’m blessed or I’m blessed and highly favored.  Maybe even you yourself have used it. Is that a bible verse? Not quite but it is in the bible but not as a full sentence. Let us see the verses and what was going on in  full context.

Luke 1: 26-31 “And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin( any woman of age that can start having children, married or unmarried, not a person that has never had sex like we’ve been taught) espoused ( had sex) to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.  And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus ( not Jesus but Yashayah).

Once again:

The definition of virgin in the Zondervan compact bible dictionary
1.Virgin-A young unmarried woman.
2.Virgin-A young woman of marriageable age, whether married or not.
No such thing as a male virgin. A virgin is a young woman usually when she begins her flowering stage, period, cycle.

Mary was the one highly favored by God and was blessed with a son, the savior of the world and was told this by the angel. She didn’t claim herself to be blessed and highly favored like individuals tend to do today. No verse speaks of individuals or Christians being “blessed and highly favored.”

Somethings in life are a blessing. Maybe receiving a job after a long period of unemployment, know you can help support your family or a new child etc. However, nowadays, people consider themselves blessed for anything.

“I got a new car. I’m blessed”

A: “Wow your looking good these days”

B: Ya, I’m blessed.

The one that really inspired me to write this post was this status I read online.

” I flew to Nigeria to film a documentary about the poverty and corruption there, unfortunately the footage was “lost” during transport BUT we finally were able to get some of the pictures we took. We are ALL truly blessed to live in America..”

Many people think just like this. If you have money or are successful your blessed and if you’re poor or struggling financially, God hates you or better, you’re not blessed. There are thousands of homeless in America, thousands on unemployment, children molested by priests and pastors, gay culture celebrated throughout the country, prayers removed from schools, this list can go on for days but you will still  hear people say like the above comment, we are blessed to be in America. Why?

Another point, Christ and his disciples, would you consider them blessed? In todays world, no one would consider them blessed individuals. They had no place to call their homes, they gave up their lives to follow Christ and were hated and persecuted until death. However, after Christ died and did the will of his Heavenly Father, he is now at the right hand of the Father and will return with all his heavenly glory to judge the living and dead with his disciples.

The bible is pretty clear on who the blessed are and we all can be among those that are blessed but these blessing don’t come in this present Earth but the world to come. Remember, you can be blessed with certain things but Christ has taught who the blessed will be.  The Beatitudes ( Better to start from Matthew 4: 23 -25, then start Matthew 5: 1-12)

Matthew 5:1-12 “And seeing the multitudes, he (Christ) went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

  • Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
  • Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
  •  Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
  •  Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
  • Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
  • Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
  •  Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
  •  Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
  • Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.”

These are the truly blessed people.

The bible has other verses on people who are blessed.

Psalms 1:1 ” Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.  For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

So here you see that a person that stays away from sinful things and meditates on the law of the Lord is blessed. This again shows you that the 10 commandments are still to be held and are not done away with as many churches teach.

Have you ever wonder why many churches never teach anything out of Revelation? Revelation holds many prophesies and warnings of things that will take place before the return of our Savior, Christ. How else can you know of these things unless you read the whole thing. Many people can be saved with the information found in Revelation and The Book of Revelation itself acknowledges that.

Revelation 1:3 - Blessed [is] he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time [is] at hand.

There you have it. Though I’m sure there are many more verses on blessed people, this should now give you a better idea of those The Most High  considers blessed. Money, clothes, status have nothing to do with a blessed individual. It’s the way you live according to the bible that will determine if you’re a blessed individual and will inherit the blessings.
